A graduate of the University of Maine School of Law, Martha was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1981 and has been a practicing attorney ever since. In 1986 she began her work in the area of elder law at the Presque Isle office of Legal Services for the Elderly, which provided free legal advice on a full range of matters that affect seniors including issues relating public benefits such as MaineCare and Social Security, powers of attorney, consumer matters, physical and financial abuse, guardianship defense, and others.
Seven years later, in 1993, she practiced with Richard Langley, Esq. of Fort Fairfield, where she honed her skills in business law, estate planning and real estate law. Over the next several years, Martha saw a growing need in northern Maine for in-depth legal services to protect seniors and help them age in place, and in 1998 she moved her practice to Presque Isle and focused on estate planning, long-term care planning, and probate. In 2017 she opened Aroostook Elder Law, LLC and continued to provide the same services from a downtown location. Martha transitioned to “of counsel” status in January 2021.
Mark joined Aroostook Elder Law in 2019 after moving to Maine and working for a year with the Smith & Associates law firm. He came to Aroostook County from Bakersfield, California, where he worked as civil rights and landlord-tenant attorney with Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance from 2009–2017. Before that Mark worked for 15 years with nonprofits including the Better Business Bureau and Mennonite Central Committee to develop alternative dispute resolution programs in California, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.
Mark earned his law degree from San Joaquin College of Law in 2006 and his bachelor of arts from Purdue University in 1984.
